The book publishing industry has undergone a series of transformations in the last decade. Bookstores are closing at a rapid rate, and e-book sales are growing at unprecedented numbers. The future of book publishing is murky, but if you want to get your work out there, this is still the best way to do it.
There are three main types of traditional publishers: Big Traditional Publishers, Mid-Sized/Small Traditional Publishers, and University Presses. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Big Traditional Publishers have the most clout with bookstores, but they also receive thousands of submissions each year, making acceptance difficult. Mid-Sized/Small Traditional Publishers may be more willing to take on new authors, but they often lack the marketing budgets of their larger competitors. University Presses generally focus on non-fiction works and authors with academic credentials, but they tend to target a smaller audience than the other two types.
Self-publishing is another option for getting your work out there. This process involves paying someone else to edit, design, and publish your book for you.
